D-Day 70th Anniversary Cruise

This fascinating cruise is designed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings of World War II and the Allied Forces invasion of occupied Europe.

  • June 2nd -  Regional departure by coach and onwards to Tilbury to join our cruise ship at the port. Car parking is available at a cost of £66 per car. We set sail early evening. D
  • June 3rd - World War I Battlefields of Flanders - Arrive Zeebrugge this morning. We include a full-day guided excursion to the First World War Battlefield of Flanders. Near Passchendaele we see Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest British war cemetery in the world and at Langemarck we look at the story of the Germans in Flanders and Adolf Hitler’s service there in WW1. Gas was a weapon first used in Flanders and at the moving ‘brooding soldier’ memorial at St Julien we look at the use of gas in the trenches. After freetime in Ypres with its famous Menin Gate we travel down the Messines Ridge and look at the war underground, seeing the mine craters at Hill 60 and Spanbroekmolen we also see where the Christmas Truce took place in 1914. B,L,D
  • June 4th - Dunkirk - We include a half-day guided excursion following the story of the Blitzkrieg - Lightening War – which swept across Belgium and France in 1940. Looking at the ‘miracle of Dunkirk’ we see where the troops were evacuated from the beaches and Dunkirk town, and visit Dunkirk Cemetery and the Dunkirk Memorial before returning to Zeebrugge. B,L,D
  • June 5th - Porstmouth - We arrive in Portsmouth this morning. Many of the troops heading to Normandy began their journey at Portsmouth. We have arranged an optional excursion to visit the excellent D-Day Museum and pay homage the Naval role in D-Day seeing the Portsmouth Memorial which commemorates many sailors who died off the Normandy coast.   • June 6th - Cruising off the Normandy Landing Beaches & Pegasus Bridge - We begin the day cruising off the Normandy beaches. A ceremony will be held in memory of those who lost their lives, before we berth in Honfleur. Join our included excursion to the area around Pegasus Bridge where some of the first fighting took place and the first British servicemen were killed. We see Pegasus Bridge and the memorials, the famous Gondree Cafe – said to be the first house liberated in France – and the graves of the Airborne troops at Ranville. B,L,D
  • June 7th - American D-Day Beaches - We arrive in Cherbourg this morning. Join our included excursion travelling down the Cherbourg peninsula to look at the American involvement in D-Day. We examine the landings on Utah Beach and at St Mere Eglise the role of US Paratroops on D-Day and visit the Iron Mike Memorial. After lunch we travel over to Omaha Beach, featured in Saving Private Ryan, and see the huge American cemetery which overlooks where the landings took place. Before returning to Cherbourg we see where the US Rangers scaled the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc to destroy a German gun battery site. B,L,D
  • June 8th - Arrive at Tilbury and join your coach for the return journey to your original joining point or make your own way home. B.

Accommodation

The Marco Polo cruise ship boasts a wide range of public facilities including the impressive Waldorf Restaurant offering a traditional two sitting fixed time dining option and, as an alternative more informal experience, the stylish Marco’s Bistro. There are five main lounge areas. The Magellan Deck offers the theatre style Marco Polo Lounge; the elegant Captain’s Club, a perfect venue for pre-dinner cocktails with the resident pianist; relaxing Palm Garden, with wonderful panoramic ocean views; and the stylish Columbus Lounge where the head barman will soon get to know your favourite drink. Enjoy a drink in Scott’s Bar, located on Amundsen Deck, an ideal spot for night owls.

Other amenities on board the MS Marco Polo include the well stocked Livingston Library, the Nansen Card Room, an Internet Café, a shopping arcade and photo gallery, the beautifully appointed Jade Wellness Centre, which offers hairdressing & beauty treatments, fitness and exercise equipment, and sauna and massage facilities. There is an outdoor swimming pool, three whirlpools and a medical centre. In addition, and in keeping with her heritage, the Amundsen Deck offers a traditional walk around promenade.

On Board Guest Speaker

Bill McQuade has a military background, having served his time in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. He has a long held interest in military history of all ages and has been guiding battlefield tours for a good number of years. As a result of his specialist global knowledge he has appeared in a number of TV documentaries.

D-Day Anniversary Cruise Highlights

  • Visit places associated with the two World Wars on this commemorative cruise at the time of the 70th Anniversary of D-Day.
  • An overnight stay in Zeebrugge presenting the chance to visit Ypres and the poignant Menin Gate, where in the evening ‘The
  • Last Post’ commemorates the sacrifices of those who fought in WW1.
  • Visit the Flanders battlefields, Passchendaele Memorial Museum and Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth War Cemetery in the world.
  • The Combined Operations Headquarters in Portsmouth, was the nerve centre of Operation Overlord, which co-ordinated and monitored the progress of the D-Day invasion fleet.
  • On the morning of 6th June, Marco Polo joins the fleet of craft sailing off the coast of Normandy. A ceremony will be held in memory of those who lost their lives on D-Day, 70 years ago.
  • The invasion beaches themselves and the D-Day Museum at Arromanches.
