4-Day Break
Day 1 – To northern France or Belgium for a three-night stay.
Day 2 – The Ypres Salient (included). Today we look at some of the key battle sites in what became known as The Ypres Salient – a place where a quarter of a million British and Commonwealth troops died in WW1. We start at the preserved trenches in Sanctuary Wood, and also visit the nearby Canadian memorial on Hill 62, before following events along the Menin Road to the important village of Gheluvelt with its memorials to the South Wales Borderers and Worcesters. Lunchtime in Ypres. In the afternoon we go to Tyne Cot Cemetery and the Passchendaele visitors centre, see Crest Farm captured by Canadian troops in the Battle of Passchendaele, and visit Langemarck where the main German cemetery for the Ypres area is found. We end the day in Ypres. B
Day 3 – Ypres and the Armistice Day Ceremonies (included). We attend ceremonies in Ypres for 11th November, with a special commemoration at the Menin Gate at 11.00am and another in the evening at 8.00pm – including the veteran’s parade from the main square in the morning.
